about Drawing Well Schematics
The beginning
I am always fascinated by stories of the ‘light bulb moment’ people have when they come up with their great idea for a business.
I would like to share my ‘light bulb moment’ with you.
The story is back in the 1990's. My first job in the oil & gas industry was a technical illustrator, just when computer graphics was in its infancy. I am sure I used the first versions of Corel Draw, Adobe, and Visio to draw downhole tools and create Tool Tech Manuals and Catalogues.
I was called in to the office on the weekend to help a colleague with a very important proposal for a large well completion job. We didn’t have any well schematic programs back then. They typically had to be drawn by hand, but he needed the proposal done by Monday. When I arrived he was working in the boardroom with papers spread out all over the boardroom table. He was cutting out pictures from tech sheets and the catalogue, scanning and reducing the size of the tool pictures. He then cut those out and was pasting them together to build a completion string - one tool at a time.
This was the original ‘cut & paste’ before it became a computer term.
This job took the two of us into the wee hours of the night, but we eventually built a well schematic with paper cutouts. When I found out the job was worth over a million dollars, that was when I had my ‘light bulb moment’. There was definitely a need for a well schematic drawing program.
So yes, I have spent the last 25 years helping engineers, technicians and support staff create great looking wellbore diagrams of all kinds. But more importantly, I have enjoyed seeing clients show with pride, a quality picture of the work they do – that nobody sees because it is sub-surface. That’s rewarding. Add to that the many other benefits of a quality diagram. Such as less mistakes in quotes and the finished job because of an accurate, easy to read well diagram.
I truly believe that a professional looking well schematic adds to your professional image. I would love to help you achieve that.
